Carson Bertagnole of Pinehurst, N.C. delivered a phenomenal opening round, carding nine-under par 61 to claim the first round lead of the 120th Southern Amateur Championship. His round, highlighted by ten birdies, positions him at the top of the leaderboard with a two-stroke lead over his competition and broke the AAC Championship Course record by two strokes.
When asked about his approach to hang onto the lead he expressed that he wants to “stay patient and make all the birdies he can tomorrow.”
Stewart Hagestad of Newport Beach, California stands in second, carding seven-under par with seven birdies.
William Love of Atlanta, Georgia stands in third with a round one score of five-under par 65.
The following players each stand tied for fourth, carding four-under par 66.
