The Championship was first played in 1973 with Buddy Rountree from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida winning the inaugural event. Charles Howell III, of Augusta, Georgia holds the record with 3 victories (1994-1996). This year marks the 54th playing of the Southern Junior Championship. In 2025, Bailey Sutter of Cullman, AL was crowned the 53rd Southern Junior Champion.
2026 marks the 54th playing of the Southern Junior Championship and the first time that University Golf Course has hosted the Southern Junior Championship. Bailey Sutter, of Cullman, AL won the 53rd Southern Junior Championship title at Dataw Island Club in St. Helena Island, South Carolina.

The forerunner to the Annual Junior Championship was first played as the Junior Division of the Southern Amateur Championship and was held in conjunction with the Championship played July 17-20, 1972 at the Green Island Country Club, Columbus, Georgia. Commencing in 1973, the Annual Junior Championship was established and conducted at a site separate from the Southern Amateur Championship. To view years of history, click Past Results.
