Patrick Cover's Course Record Takes Lead at Southern Amateur

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Round two results of the 112th Southern Amateur Championship of the Southern Golf Association hosted by The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky. on Thursday, July 19, 2018 (7313 yards, par 36-36—72, 75.8/139).
The 112th Southern Amateur Championship continued today at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green. Cooler conditions with little wind made for ideal scoring conditions for the 154 players that began play in round two.
Patrick Cover of Cornelius, N.C. fired an incredible nine-under par 63 in round two to break the course record. The previous course record was held by former U.S. Amateur champion Steven Fox who posted a 64 in the 2012 NCAA Bowling Green Regionals while playing for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Cover, who started on the tenth hole, birdied holes 11 and 12 before holing a 35-foot putt on the drivable 347-yard 14th hole for eagle. Cover proceeded to birdie holes 15, 16, 17, and 18 for an outward nine-hole score of 28. After a bogey at the 244-yard par three third, Cover birdied holes four and seven to come in with a tournament total of 12-under par (132).
Two shots back in a tie for second place are Taylor Bibbs of San Diego, Calif. and Luke Long of Fayetteville, Ark. after second-round scores of six-under par 66, and four-under par 68 respectively. Bibbs carded seven birdies on the day with nines of 34 and 32 for a tournament total of 134 (-10). Long carded the first bogey-free round of the tournament with birdies at holes nine, 12, 14, and 18.
First round co-leaders Hunter Richardson and Nathan Jeansonne both slipped down the leaderboard on day two. Richardson got off to a shaky start with a double-bogey five on the third hole, however he had a back nine of five-under par 31 which included eagles at holes 11 and 18. His second round 70 puts him in fourth place with a tournament total of nine-under par (135). Jeansonne carded a two-over par 74. He sits in a tie for 19th place with a tournament total of five-under par 139.
Highlight of the day was Jorge Garcia of Doral, Fl. acing the 142-yard par 3 16th hole.
Following today’s round the field was cut to the low 66 scores and ties for the final two rounds. 76 players with a score of one-over par or better made the cut.
Round three will begin tomorrow at 7:30a.m. from both the first and tenth tees.
