Vilips and Crouch Share 36-Hole Lead at Southern Amateur

PINEHURST, NC – Second round results of the 111th Southern Amateur Championship of the Southern Golf Association hosted by The Country Club of North Carolina (Dogwood) in Pinehurst, NC on Thursday, July 20, 2017 (7301 yards, par 36-36—72, 74.9/135).
First round leader Karl Vilips of Australia and Stoney Crouch of Mount Juliet, TN share a one shot lead at the halfway point of the 111th Southern Amateur Championship at 133 (-11).
Defending champion and No. 12 ranked amateur in the world, Jimmy Stanger of Tampa, FL carded a second round 73 (141) stands in a tie for 21st place.
The field was cut to the low 66 scores and ties for the final two rounds. The cut line fell at 144 with 71 players advancing to the final 36 holes.
Round 2 Notes:
  • 61 players are under par through 36 holes with the field average score of 73.3 that was a half shot harder than round one
  • 66 (-6) was the low round of the day carded by Will Miles of Hilton Head Island, SC
  • 13-year-old Jackson Van Paris of Pinehurst and CCNC member made the cut at 143
  • Pierceson Coody of Plano, TX stands at 140 and is the grandson of 1971 Masters Champion Charles Coody
  • 522 birdies and 18 eagles made in round two
  • Easiest hole: No. 5, 523 yard par 5, 4.55 scoring average
  • Hardest Hole: No. 8, 222 yard par 3, 3.48 scoring average
The Southern Amateur Championship is open to male, amateur golfers who have a current USGA Handicap Index of 3.4 or less.
