Stanford Commit Vilips Wins 111th Southern Amateur Championship

PINEHURST, NC – Final results of the 111th Southern Amateur Championship of the Southern Golf Association hosted by The Country Club of North Carolina (Dogwood) in Pinehurst, NC on Saturday, July 22, 2017 (7301 yards, par 36-36—72, 74.9/135).
 
15-year-old Karl Vilips of Australia earned his first major amateur championship title firing a five-under par 67 leading to a one shot victory over Stoney Crouch of Mount Juliet, TN at the 111th Southern Amateur Championship played at The Country Club of North Carolina. His round of 67 was the low round of the day.
 
Vilips, a 2020 Stanford commit, finished the 72-hole championship at 273 (-15) that fell just shy of Webb Simpson’s record at CCNC of 272 posted in 2007. This is the seventh time that CCNC has played host to the Southern Amateur Championship (1971, 1979, 1985, 1990, 1996, 2007, 2017).
Defending champion, Jimmy Stanger of Tampa, FL carded a final round 76 (289) to finish T37.
 
Round 4 Notes:
  • 35 players finished under par for the championship with field average score of 74.55
  • 67 (-5) was the low round of the day carded by champion Karl Vilips
  • Only 12 players posted under par final rounds
  • CCNC members W. Scott Lincicome of Pinehurst finished T50 at 292 (+4) and 13-year-old Jackson Van Paris of Pinehurst placed T46 at 291 (+3)
  • Low Mid-Amateur (Age 25+): Patrick Christovich of New Orleans, LA at 285 (-3)
  • 186 birdies and 10 eagles made in final round
  • Final Round Easiest hole: No. 12, 564 yard par 5, 4.55 scoring average
  • Final Round Hardest Hole: No. 16, 238 yard par 3, 3.55 scoring average
  • Championship Easiest Hole: No. 5, 523 yard par 5, 4.61 scoring average
  • Championship Hardest Hole: No. 16, 238 yard par 3, 3.35 scoring average
The Southern Amateur Championship is open to male, amateur golfers who have a current USGA Handicap Index of 3.4 or less.
