Vilips and Go Share First Round Lead at Southern Amateur

PINEHURST, NC – First round results of the 111th Southern Amateur Championship of the Southern Golf Association hosted by The Country Club of North Carolina (Dogwood) in Pinehurst, NC on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 (7301 yards, par 36-36—72, 74.9/135).
 
Lloyd Jefferson Go of the Philippines and Karl Vilips of Australia each fired a seven-under 65 to share the first round lead at the 111th Southern Amateur Championship.
 
Defending champion and No. 12 ranked amateur in the world, Jimmy Stanger of Tampa, FL started his title defense with an opening round of 68 placing him only three shots off the lead.
 
Round 1 Notes:
  • 69 players are under par through the first 18 holes with the field average score of 72.4
  • CCNC member W. Scott Lincicome of Pinehurst opened with a four-under 68
  • 13-year-old Jackson Van Paris of Pinehurst and CCNC member carded a two-under 70
  • Four of the top 13 scores from today was from players that hail from North Carolina
  • 563 birdies and 6 eagles made in round one
  • Easiest hole: No. 18, 510 yard par 5, 4.67 scoring average
  • Hardest Hole: No. 8, 222 yard par 3, 3.250 scoring average
After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 66 scores and ties for the final two rounds.
 
The Southern Amateur Championship is open to male, amateur golfers who have a current USGA Handicap Index of 3.4 or less.
