The 112th Southern Amateur Championship concluded today at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green. Play was delayed by 30 minutes due to severe storms last night that delivered two and a quarter inches of rain. Olde Stone’s maintenance staff worked quickly and tirelessly to get the bunkers in shape for an 8:00a.m. start.

Patrick Cover of Cornelius, N.C. held on in the final round to become the 112th Southern Amateur Champion. Cover began the day with a five-shot lead over S.M. Lee of Buford, Ga. and Eric Ansett of Spokane, Wash. However his lead was cut to three shots by the tenth tee.

Cover made a birdie on 11 to get back to even par for the day but bogeys at 15 and 16 had him going down the final hole with a two shot lead over Ansett and a three shot lead over Lee. Despite Lee making eagle at the Par 5 18th hole, Cover tapped in for par to secure the title of Southern Amateur Champion. His final round of 74 gave him a tournament total of 276 (-12), one shot better than Lee’s 277, and two shots better than Ansett’s 278.

Cover won a five year exemption into the Southern Amateur Championship however aims to turn professional following Web.com Qualifying School later this year. He also received a silver medal, an inscribed Calamity Jane putter, and his name on the prestigious George W. Adair Trophy that is housed in the Bobby Jones Room at Atlanta Athletic Club.
