BIRMINGHAM, AL (October 17, 2017) – Davis Riley, a 20-year-old junior at The University of Alabama, has been named Amateur of the Month for September by the Southern Golf Association (SGA).
Riley, a native of Hattiesburg, MS, opened his fall season finishing tied for third in the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, GA with a score of seven-under 209 against a star-studded field leading his team to a tie for first place with host Georgia Tech.
Shortly thereafter, he claimed his first collegiate victory at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational hosted by Olympia Fields Country Club after shooting a career low of 10-under 200 for a three stroke victory against another strong field that included Texas A&M and Oklahoma State.
Riley is currently the No. 51 ranked amateur in the World according to Scratch Players World Amateur Ranking and No. 42 by the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Winners of the SGA’s monthly award are determined by a national panel of golf officials, coaches and journalists. Now in its 14th season, notable recipients have been Bill Haas, Michelle Wie, Hunter Mahan, Ryan Moore, J. B. Holmes, Webb Simpson, Rhys Davies, Kyle Stanley, Kevin Fortin-Simard, Rickie Fowler, Danny Lee, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Alice Hewson, and more recently Braden Thornberry and Cameron Champ.
The SGA supports amateur golf at the highest level by conducting two major international championships. The storied Southern Amateur Championship is set to be played for the 112th time at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, KY from July 18-21, 2018. The 46th Southern Junior Championship will be contested from June 13-15, 2018 at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, LA.
